Job brief

The General Manager China is responsible for the leadership and business performance of Cardinal Health in China. The China GM will be responsible for thoughtful leadership of the country’s commercial efforts including but not limited to its business strategy, business development, portfolio management, and P&L performance. The role will also coordinate and influence supporting functions to ensure each are aligned with global and regional strategies and in accordance with regulators, compliance corporate policies and local regulations, policies, and practices.

The role will be responsible for developing a comprehensive business strategy and driving market share gains by growing all major product categories, and by working with local and regional commercial leadership to develop downstream strategies & market appropriate local execution plans. The China GM will be responsible for driving “Customer Centricity” and optimizing commercial effectiveness. The role will lead a team of commercial professionals including sales managers, marketing manager, and government affairs manager. The China GM will also be responsible for driving open culture, championing DE&I, and developing talent within China team.

This is a highly visible leadership position, needing to collaborate closely and influence regional marketing, regional business leaders, local sales and marketing teams, and every supporting function.

This role will report to the Managing Director Asia Direct Markets and will be a key member of our Asia Direct Market’s leadership team. The role will preferably be based in Shanghai.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Lead China business and effectively partner-up with commercial teams and functional leaders to deliver on strategic and tactical plans for this business

  • Develop business strategy for all Cardinal Heath Medical Products including Specialty, OR and Gen Med portfolios.

  • Lead the commercial function and manage a team of sales managers, marketing manager, and government affairs manager, setting up clear objectives and supporting the team to achieve these goals.

  • Ensure cross-functional collaboration and alignment to the strategic plans for successful execution.

  • Full P&L responsibility. Lead the business development strategy, plans and execution, developing short-term and long-term tactics to grow revenue & profitability for the countries included in the cluster.

  • Use data driven approach to optimize commercial operations and optimize cost to deliver higher returns.

  • Champion customer centricity be actioning on VOC results and improving processes / ways of working to drive consistently higher net promoter score (NPS)

  • Support the development of new direct customers and, when appropriate, indirect channels to ensure commercial goals are achieved including Top Line, Standard Gross Profit and Contribution Margin.

  • Key member of Asia Direct Markets leadership team.

  • Attract, develop, and retain outstanding talent, establishing succession planning initiatives and developing high potential employees.

  • Lead and develop the commercial team, ensuring engagement, adequate training, talent development and clear career development plans. Fosters a positive and open work environment, leading by example, and driving team engagement across all functional areas.

  • Develop, maintain, and cultivate close relationships with decision-makers and other influencers securing product line penetration and increasing market share.

  • Develop comprehensive market insights to support clinical and commercial strategy and goals and foster a culture of data driven decision making.

  • Develop and foster business relationships with key customers and key opinion leaders to assess industry trends and to identify future product opportunities and innovation.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field. MBA preferred.

  • 10+ year’s leadership experience and a minimum of 3+ years of General Management in a multinational environment, preferably in the pharmaceutical or medical device industries.

  • Proven cross-cultural skills, ability to excel in a highly complex matrix organization and influence cross functional teams.

  • Fluency (written and spoken) in Mandarin and English is a must. Excellent written and verbal communication skills a must.

  • Strong leadership skills with a track record of developing talent and building highly engaged teams.

  • Broad & deep experience across a variety of therapeutic areas in China.

  • Strong business and financial acumen demonstrated by successful managing every line of the P&L.

  • High capacity to manage complex market issues, customer requirements, and provide clear leadership.

  • Strong negotiation, communication and presentation skills, ability to effectively influence executives and employees at all levels

  • Strong customer focus and ability to build and maintain strong relationships with customers & associations across the sub region.

  • Ability to deliver results in a sustainable manner, aligned to laws and regulations with impeccable integrity.
