CITY OF PERRY Lab Technician (Laboratory Technician) in PERRY, Florida

Laboratory Technician - Wastewater Division Nature of Work: This is a specialized technical position involving the operation of laboratory equipment in the wastewater plant. Employee is responsible for the efficient operation and regulation of laboratory equipment for the analysis of sewage. Employee is required to know and work in accordance with established operating procedures, but may receive specific instructions for departures from standard procedures. Employee may exercise limited judgment in making adjustments to machinery, equipment, and related apparatus. Work is performed under direct supervision of the Superintendent and/or Deputy Superintendent of the Wastewater Division. Performance is evaluated on basis of observation, inspections, and review of records. Employee may be required to perform periodic standby for emergency calls and service after regular hours and on holidays. Examples of Work: Conducts a variety of routine chemical and/or bacteriological tests. May conduct such tests as biomechanical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, chlorine demand and residual, settle-able, suspend, volatile, or various chemical, bacteriological, and biomechanical tests and keeps records as required. Responsible for the care, cleaning, and sterilization of equipment used in testing. Visits the areas to test and takes samples from various plant units for testing. Performs other job- related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of general laboratory techniques and procedures as related to treatment and analysis.

Considerable knowledge of methods, practices, and operating procedures of sewage treatment and disposal, and of health and safety factors involved in procedures of modern sewage treatment.

Considerable knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment used in sewage treatment, and of maintenance procedures for such equipment.

Knowledge of the principals of bacteriology and/or chemistry.

Considerable knowledge of the chemical and physical processes involved in the treatment of sewage.

Considerable knowledge of the proper procedures used in compilation of laboratory reports and tests.

Knowledge of federal, state, and municipal laws, statutes and ordinances pertaining to sewage treatment plant operation.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with plant operations and of necessary safety precautions. Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation, detect defects in operation, and make necessary adjustments.

Ability to read meters and charts accurately and maintain records of shift operations.

Ability to make laboratory tests under standard procedures and make treatment adjustments accordingly.

Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions without immediate supervision. Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare technical reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and others as necessitated by work.

Training and Experience

Graduation from high school with a standard diploma or high school equivalency required, preferably with completion of some chemistry courses. Must have one year of experience with laboratory techniques, procedures, and analysis of wastewater. Prefer some training in chemistry and biology or bacteriology, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Class "C" Wastewater Operator Certification required at the time of employment. Dual certification preferred. Will be required to obtain Class B Wastewater Operator Certification upon eligibility.

Willingness to continue education by correspondence course study or local college training program. Must possess a valid Florida Drivers License.
