The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Associate Director (AD) of Multicultural Affairs/ Program Director for LGBTQ@Columbia reports directly to the Associate Dean of Multicultural Affairs (MA) and will serve as the lead on LGBTQ@Columbia programming. Primary responsibilities include: oversight and coordination of LGBTQIA+ programs and resources, and preparation of relevant trainings for students and relevant constituents. The AD will demonstrate a strong knowledge base of campus climate concerns within the undergraduate LGBTQIA+ community and is responsible to provide a comprehensive range of advocacy, education, information, and referrals for LGBTQIA+ individuals and student groups. The AD will provide individual support to students in their social, leadership, and identity development. Broadly, the AD will support campus bias response as well as contribute to office-wide diversity and inclusion trainings, curricula development, and Multicultural Affairs initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • As program director for LGBTQ@Columbia, oversee, facilitate, and assess MA's programming and resources focused on the LGBTQIA+ (including lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual) community. Apply identity development, intersectionality, and social justice frameworks to all programs and events. Work with MA staff to develop and execute programmatic collaborations. Work with MA staff, Residential Life, and Housing in the oversight and management of the Stephen Donaldson Lounge.
  • Provide information, outreach, support, and advisement for undergraduates on sexual orientation and gender identity. With various campus partners, establish LGBTQIA+ focused support networks, develop and provide resources, and create community building social activities. Make referrals to other professionals, offices, or organizations on and off campus and follow-up with students, as needed.
  • Identify areas for solidarity building, campus awareness, and learning on issues concerning LGBTQIA+ populations and experiences, particularly in higher educations. With the Manager of Diversity Education, develop, design, and implement related workshops and trainings, including CU Safe Zone, relevant train-the-trainer programs, and advanced-level training.
  • With the Associate Dean of MA, Dean of Undergraduate Student Life (USL), and relevant partners, lead advocacy efforts to address campus climate issues impacting LGBTQIA+ students. Oversee the Queer and Trans Student Advisory Board within MA. Through the Queer and Trans Resource Team, develop recommendations, in partnership with relevant offices, to improve campus experiences for LGBTQIA+ students.
  • As associate director of Multicultural Affairs, advise identity-based student organizations; develop strong advisory relationships with student group leaders and, when possible, their members. Utilize a strong knowledge of student development theory and leadership development theory to inform advising practices. Inform advisees about relevant University and USL policies and procedures, provide guidance in interpreting policies and procedures, train students in event planning and management, and assist with critical decision-making efforts. Provide logistical support for recognized student organizations, including monitoring budgets, negotiating contracts with performers and service providers, providing evening and weekend event coverage and advisement when needed, and facilitate and encourage inter-organization communication and collaboration.
  • Contribute to the development, writing, facilitation, and assessment of original diversity education curricula for general Multicultural Affairs by-request workshops and trainings. Develop and execute related train-the-trainer programs. Collaborate with the Manager of Diversity Education to coordinate broad campus education, including by-request workshops.
  • Provide individual support to students and groups in their social, leadership, and identity development. including advising and referral, as appropriate, in response to campus bias incidents. Assist the Associate Dean with the coordination and implementation of gathering spaces and campus education projects following incidents.
  • Represent Multicultural Affairs on cross-functional work teams within the Undergraduate Student Life unit, which is comprised of the Multicultural Affairs, Residential Life, Student Engagement, and Administration & Planning.
  • Assist with programs and services that further the missions of Multicultural Affairs, Undergraduate Student Life, Columbia College, and Columbia Engineering.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required.

  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in student affairs required.

  • Strong knowledge of LGBTQIA+ and social justice education, student development theory, leadership development theory, and community building required.

  • Excellent intercultural communication; strong curriculum writing and facilitation skills; as well as, prior work with diverse student populations required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have a strong background in working with LGBTQIA+ students, cultural organizations, international students, first-generation and/or low income students, students of color, and diverse populations; as well as a substantive understanding of diversity as it relates to the intersections of multiple identities (such as gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, ability, and socio-economic status).

  • Masters in Student Personnel Administration or related field preferred.

  • Experience working in an urban setting preferred.
