American Express (“AXP”) is looking for a colleague who will ambitiously own and manage Tax advisory responsibilities for Spain, together with wider EU taxes. The role will provide outstanding tax support to various business lines and other critical stakeholders of the corporation. This is an advisory and controversy focused role working closely with the wider regional tax and finance organization and reporting to VP-Taxes, EMEA region located in London.

In the capacity of Tax director, you will act as trusted advisor to stakeholders in Spain as well as AXP Global Tax Organization. The role is direct tax advisory focused related to domestic and international transactions, ensuring strong tax positions through tax planning, audit management and interaction with internal and external interest groups. The scope of responsibilities may be extended to cover other markets.

Core Responsibilities

  • To provide practical and accurate tax advice to the business and partners.

  • Own the management of tax authority audits and other disputes with tax authorities. Ensure that appropriate positions are taken in external audits, and negotiate strategically for an efficient outcome.

  • Proactively participate in business initiatives and other projects to drive tax efficiency. Determine the tax implications of projects and communicate the implications to stakeholders, ensuring these are understood.

  • Where required, act as subject matter expert to any resulting business or compliance processes changes.

  • Take a lead in identifying, understanding and communicating domestic, EU and OECD driven tax law changes; be willing to participate in the conversation through local and EU networking groups.

  • Develop and maintain networks with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Proactively collaborate with the wider EMEA Tax Advisory team and Global Tax teams in New York, India and other regions to ensure effective and smooth business knowledge sharing to mitigate wider Tax risks.

  • Drive effective governance and support control of the markets’ tax processes to ensure AXP’s compliance with all relevant tax laws.

  • Support tax processes and systems transformation to improve digital and process efficiency.

  • Lead or support projects and other tax tasks as required.

  • Provide leadership and mentorship for any direct reports assigned to this position, as well as other colleagues participating in common initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of high quality, impactful post-qualification direct tax experience gained in a reputable professional environment and/or large multinational corporate environment.

  • Hold a relevant professional qualification (i.e., legal, tax and/or accounting).

  • Experience working with or for a US multinational is desired but not crucial.

  • Proven multi-jurisdictional understanding of relevant corporate income tax rules and an appreciation of emerging legislation impacting the EMEA region.

  • Must be highly analytical and be able to creatively apply tax rules to business situations to achieve positive results, while assuring full compliance with applicable laws.

  • A strong, proactive and collaborative leader with good teamwork, partnership & negotiation skills.

  • Must be a self-starter with high integrity and ethics. Can work independently with high efficiency, diligence and speed of actions.

  • Clear communication skills, including proven track record to distill and explain highly technical issues to diverse audience.

  • Proven relationship builder across functions, levels, and world zones; exudes a true, collaborative orientation.

  • Business level English language skills required.

  • Spanish as a plus
