Science Systems and Applications, Inc. Associate Aerospace Engineer in Lanham, Maryland

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a talented and motivated Space Engineer to join our Instrument Operations Team (IOT) in support of a crucial Earth Observation mission at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This role is integral to ensuring the mission's success through meticulous instrument characterization and ongoing maintenance efforts.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Support the Instrument Operations Team to maintain the health, safety, and long-term calibration of Earth observation instruments.

  • Interface continuously with the NASA Flight Operations Team (FOT), sensor vendors, and instrument science teams to ensure seamless communication and coordination.

  • Support routine on-orbit instrument calibration monitoring and implement necessary updates to maintain optimal instrument performance.

  • Support the characterization and assessment of instrument health and functionality, addressing any anomalies promptly and effectively. Work within a dedicated team of experienced scientists and engineers, contributing to the overall success of the mission through shared expertise and collaborative problem-solving.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Real-time and historical telemetry data analysis and commanding Executing (planning, scheduling, evaluating) periodic and impromptu calibrations

  • Develop and maintain operational products consisting of real-time procedures, stored command sequences/loads, and instrument flight software loads

  • Telemetry and data archive automation Documentation maintenance of standard operating procedures and operational concepts

  • Operational reporting: weekly, monthly, annually

  • Maintain and update IOT website

  • Support characterization by developing and utilizing instrument data processing tools for calibration and performance assessments.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Spacecraft/Instrument related Engineering field (Aerospace, Physics, Remote Sensing, etc.) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Fluent in the use of data analysis, report writing, and program coding tools

  • Experience programming with a high-level language (IDL, Python, C/C++, Java, etc.)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required

Desired Qualifications:

  • Unix/Linux shell scripting and automation

  • Microsoft Windows shell/batch scripting

    Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
