Title: Global Medical Affairs Leader - Diabetes

Location: Cambridge UK, Gaithersburg US, Gothenburg Sweden

As a Medical Affairs Leader (MAL) you’ll play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients’ lives. GPPS (Global Product and Portfolio Strategy) bridges science and commercial, integrating corporate, portfolio, therapy areas and product strategies, providing strategic direction from early-stage research through to commercialization.

Reporting directly to the Medical Head, the MAL will be charged with delivering ambitious medical strategies. In so doing, the MAL will play an important role in defining the product strategy. The MAL will execute the medical strategy globally through membership of the Global Medical Team, comprised of Medical Directors from the priority markets and relevant Global Medical Affairs functions. The role entails leveraging high impact evidence activities and medical materials as well as demonstrating world-class scientific engagement with external experts and other key customers.

Accountabilities/Responsibilities

  • Designs and manages the implementation of the GMA product strategy and plan

  • Proactive member of the Global Medical Team (GMT), ensuring global strategy is effectively communicated and executed at regional and country levels and that regional/country needs are appropriately accommodated in global deliverables

  • Cross-functional collaboration within GPPS and other GMA functions (e.g. Global Medical Excellence, Medical Evidence); ensures alignment of publications and medical evidence plans

  • Closely follows medical developments within therapy area, and disseminates new information to educate and inform plans

  • Liaises with the internal and external medical/scientific community

  • Supports and delegates for Medical Head at Global Product Team (GPT) and Global Brand Team GBT)

  • Accountable for engaging and cultivating relationships with leading global KEEs, e.g. to gain contribution/ participation in advisory boards, greater understanding of the therapeutic area, insights into unmet patient needs, etc

  • Represents AZ at scientific and medical forums, e.g. medical education symposia, scientific exchange meetings, congresses, etc

  • Reports to Medical Head, Diabetes (orals)

Budget responsibility

  • Ensures effective management of defined activities within TA GMA budget

Minimum Requirements – Education and Experience

  • MD, PhD, Pharm D or equivalent

  • Good expertise in diabetes or related (metabolic, cardiovascular, renal) therapy area

  • Experience in Medical Affairs or similar function, working cross-functionally across a product team

  • Experience developing medical plans for the approval/launch of new products

  • Demonstrated strategic and medical leadership ability

  • Track record of delivering results and impactful new initiatives in a complex matrix environment
