Lilly Scientist I, Early Preclinical Development in Boston, Massachusetts

The Early Preclinical Development (EPD) team is seeking a Scientist, preferably with in-depth knowledge of inner ear histology, to support the development of product candidates from early discovery through IND-enabling stages. The ideal candidate will report to the Director of Early Preclinical Development, Histology and will work closely with a team of scientists aiming to develop therapies that have the potential to restore and preserve hearing. The scope of work includes the execution of in vivo and ex vivo experiments in mice and non-human primates (NHPs). The successful candidate will be self-motivated and creative, with a desire to succeed at the highest level in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Execute in vivo and/or ex vivo nonclinical experiments for the development of gene therapies for the inner ear:

  • Perform histologic preparations of mouse and NHP inner ear tissue, including whole-mount dissections and/or cryosections and immunohistochemistry

  • Perform epifluorescent and confocal microscopy

  • Perform necropsies and/or tissue harvest from mice and inner ear tissue harvest from NHPs

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of activities through meticulous lab notebook practices and contributions to reports

  • Perform and develop analyses of histologic data and find efficiencies for histologic processes

  • Participate in weekly scientific and cross-functional meetings to communicate procedures, results, and data interpretation; summarize integrated datasets from different functional teams in EPD

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and external groups to coordinate and drive complex studies

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in neuroscience, molecular, cellular biology, or similar field.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • 3 years of hands-on experience working in a laboratory environment; biotech, or biopharma industry preferred

  • Proven ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team and contribute to a highly collaborative environment

  • Highly creative, organized, and detail-oriented

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to thoroughly document, interpret, and effectively present scientific data to other scientists

  • Excellent computer skills and Microsoft Products proficiency (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)

  • Proficient in epifluorescent and confocal microscopy

  • Knowledge of cochlear anatomy, cochlear microdissection (whole-mount or sections), and methods for histological preparation of inner ear tissues preferred

  • Experience in data analysis using image analysis software, such as ImageJ, Amira, or Imaris

  • Experience in solving scientific problems and/or image analysis using programming languages in at least one language such as Python or MATLAB
